Located in the northwest part of the Missouri State University campus, spacious John Q. Hammons Student Center serves as home to the Missouri State men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, swimming and rifle teams. Opened in 1976-77, Hammons Student Center is the largest indoor facility is southwest Missouri, with a main arena seating capacity of 8,858. The arena has 4,658 permanent chair-back seats surrounding the court, with folding bleacher units on the north and south ends providing the additional seats. In addition to its use for Missouri State Intercollegiate competition in men's and women's basketball, volleyball, swimming and rifle, Hammons Student Center hosts many other events, including concerts, meetings, high school tournaments and three Missouri State commencements each year. The building has hosted appearances by the Harlem Globetrotters and four National Basketball Association per-season hames. Performers who have made appearances in Hammons include Bob Hope, Anne Murray, Huey Lewis and the News, Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Barbara Mandrell, Barry Manilow, Genesis, Bill Cosby, Dolly Parton, George Carlin, Garth Brooks, John McEnroe, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Amy Grant, Alabama, Chicago and James Taylor.
